Walkie Talkie’s’ Sky Garden

Oh how the rooftops of London have changed in the post Mary Poppins era. No longer do they conjure up images of chimney pots and Dick van Dyke’s team of ‘sweeps’ giving it some ‘Chim Chim Che-ree’.

Rooftop venues now fill the top level of many London structures – frequently offering views of other London rooftop venues!

Standing in Landing 42 of the ‘Cheesegrater’ (the self-proclaimed highest event venue in London) you’re looking pretty much straight across at revellers in the ‘Walkie Talkie’s’ Sky Garden - and down on the ‘Gherkin’s’ diners!

So here’s a snapshot of a somewhat eclectic mix of some of London’s event venues with altitude that I’ve recently visited.

Place to be seen: Radio Bar, ME Hotel

Perched high above the Strand, this high-end ‘place to be seen’ sits on the 10th floor of the ME Hotel. It has a distinctive Balearic club vibe, though the views are entirely London – from The London Eye to St Pauls’ Cathedral.

City Limits: Sky Garden, 20 Fenchurch Street

Encased in a large glass dome, 155m high at the top of the ‘Walkie Talkie’. It houses 3 storeys of beautifully landscaped public gardens – the highest in London - with spectacular 360 degree views across the City and beyond.

Old favourite: The Roof Gardens, Kensington

London's only rooftop Private Members Club is as glamorous as it comes. Set amidst 1.5 acres of stunning rooftop gardens, 100 feet above Kensington High Street. A top notch outdoor BBQ, various VIP areas and the Spanish Garden all make for a luxurious and chic outdoor space and probably London’s most versatile rooftop event venue.

Out of town: Sky Bar 9, Hilton London Wembley

Boasting the iconic Wembley Stadium as a backdrop, this hidden gem is a modern, sophisticated bar, with an expansive outdoor terrace. Perfect for breaking away from the conference room or breaking out the bubbly.

And our budget offering: The Driver, King’s Cross

Hangout in this cosy rooftop spot on the 5th floor of The Driver gastro pub – a boutique venue, where modern elegance and timeless style, meet urban adventure and the cosy outdoors.
