During my Events Management degree I took part in an industry placement in a wedding venue; where I decided this was the industry for me.
I loved helping couples create their perfect wedding day, experiencing their celebrations with their loved ones and hearing all about family dramas! I really enjoyed building a relationship with my couples, so it was a big decision for me to leave the wedding industry after 6 years and move into the corporate world!
The biggest difference I noticed since joining Rockitfish is the vast amount of events which are incorporated within the corporate sector. From the more “business like” overnight conference to the extremely complex overseas incentives, there are a huge number of different suppliers and venues out there in the industry. I am used to working with florists and photographers within Hertfordshire, but now I am tasked with finding a hotel which can hold 250 people in Barcelona for a 3 day meeting! I have been with Rockitfish for only six months but I have visited more venues and seen a wider range of events than I have in the last six years!
Working for a venue has allowed me to gain strong knowledge of the logistics, limitations and relationships between various venue departments. I can visualise the challenges that can arise between the kitchen and the operations team when a client would like a three course choice menu but doesn’t want to have place cards with peoples choices on; or the potential strain on reception and housekeeping if the guests want to check prior to check in time. I then work with the client to manage their expectations and decide upon a plan of action that will make their event run smoothly.
I was worried that I would miss the personal touches moving from weddings to corporate events, but I couldn’t have been more wrong! Seeing how a company can use their branding, work together during a team build and congratulate each other through award ceremonies, you don’t need to know that the bridesmaids boyfriend isn’t liked by any of the wedding to experience the fun and laughter the companies encounter.
In a nutshell, there are many crossovers and similarities between the wedding and corporate event industry, but most noticeably less nervous mother of the brides and more Christmas parties held in London museums.
